“Stubbs” got his name because he had a short stub for a tail.
A part-manx cat with a short tail, known as Stubbs has been the mayor of Talkeetna, Alaska since shortly after his birth, when he was elected. The town’s 900 residents didn’t like the human candidates running for mayor so everyone voted for Stubbs the cat as a write-in candidate and he won the election. How would you like to be the loser in that political race? Stubbs spends most of his time at Nagley’s General Store, where he is quite popular, especially with tourists.
Talkeetna is located near Mount McKinley and is about 180 km northwest of Anchorage. Because it is a “historical district,” the mayoral post is more symbolic than functional, so most residents are fine with a furry four-legged feline in office.
