12 people have been killed and at least 50 more injured (many in critical condition) in a shooting at The Dark Knight Rises premiere at Century 16 cinema complex just outside Aurora, Colorado.

EDIT 2012-07-20T12:03 (EST): Police revised down the death toll from 14 earlier to 12, stating about 50 people in total had been shot, including the deceased.

A lone gunman, allegedly dressed in all in black wearing a riot helmet, bullet proof vest and goggles, walked through a theater throwing canisters of tear gas and indiscriminately shooting people with a rifle.

Salina Jordan, a witness to the incident, told the Denver Post she had seen one girl shot in the cheek, and a girl of approximately nine years of age with a gunshot to her stomach.

A 24-year-old man was arrested in a car park nearby in possession of a rifle and handgun. He told police that explosives were stored at his home. The FBI, working with police, say no terrorism link has been established.

EDIT 2012-07-20T12:03 (EST): The man arrested is thought to be James Holmes. He was reportedly armed with a rifle and two handguns and told police he had explosives at his home, which has been surrounded by a SWAT team.

I absolutely abhor this wanton violence and my thoughts and prayers are with the victims and families of those involved in this terrible tragedy.
