The Abyss

The Abyss is a classic James Cameron science fiction movie filmed in the largest underwater filming set ever constructed in the containment building of Cherokee Nuclear Power Plant, an unfinished nuclear power plant, near Gaffney, South Carolina.

SPOILERS

A nuclear submarine encounters an unknown submersible able to move at incredible speeds. Assuming it to be USSR technology, the American submarine pursues it. The craft causes massive electrical and hydraulic malfunctions in the American sub, causing it to crash into an underwater cliff.

The US navy conscripts workers of a nearby underwater oil rig to locate and investigate the cause of the crash. The oil rig workers are joined by a team of navy SEALS with a secret agenda. As the crew embark on their mission, a hurricane breaks out miles on the surface. Their rig is damaged, crippled on the bottom of the sea. The crew soon realizes there is something else down there with them deep in the heart of the ocean’s abyss.
