John Selby Spong is an Episcopalian priest who argues that “Hell” is an invention of the church to control people with fear.

The idea that the Truth of God can be bound in any human system, by any human creed, by any human book, is almost beyond imagination for me.

I am inclined to agree with this man’s views. If only more men of God could be so enlightened, we might not be reading about religious violence on a daily basis. Belief should be left to each individual’s conscience. It is a relationship between themselves and the divine, however one might choose to interpret it. There should never be an imposition of religion on another; it must be a voluntary practice, or it is not belief but a human mandate.
