The Eagle
The Eagle is a 2011 historical epic film starring Channing Tatum. In Roman-ruled Britain, a young Roman soldier seeks to restore honor to his father’s memory by finding his lost legion’s golden Eagle standard.
SPOILERS
20 years after the unexplained disappearance of the entire Ninth Legion in the mountains of Scotland, young centurion from Rome, Marcus Flavius Aquila, arrives in Britain to serve at his first post as a garrison commander.
Marcus’s alertness and decisiveness saves the garrison from being overrun by Celtic tribesmen. During the ensuing battle he is injured while attempting to save a scouting mission he deployed earlier. He is decorated for his bravery but honorably discharged because of his injuries.
As he recovers and contemplates his future, Marcus hears rumors that the eagle standard has been seen in the north of Britain. To restore his family’s name to honor, Aquila decides to recover it. He is accompanied only by his British slave, Esca, and the two set out across Hadrian’s Wall into the uncharted highlands of Caledonia.
They confront Britain’s savage tribes, make peace with his father’s memory, and attempt to regain the lost legion’s golden emblem, the Eagle of the Ninth.
An entertaining movie with some decent action, but nothing to write home about… Good movie to kill some time if you have nothing better to do, and share my passion for the Roman Empire. I thought the portrayal of the Roman armor and their phalanx was fairly accurate. In terms of action, it won’t hold a candle to Gladiator in my opinion.
