This morning around 9:26 AM (03:26 GMT) near the small town of Chebarkul in the Ural mountains of Russia, a meteorite crashed to Earth, injuring approximately 500 people. Russian emergencies ministry stated that thousands of rescue workers have been dispatched to the area to provide relief.
A large meteor estimated to weigh about 10 tons partially burned up in the lower atmosphere, resulting in fragments falling earthwards at supersonic speed, one of which struck near Chebarkul. Continue reading

Astronomers have discovered the largest known structure in the Universe: a large quasar group spanning 4 billion light-years in diameter. The record-breaking quasar group was spotted in data gathered by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Quasars are the nuclei of galaxies from the early days of the Universe that undergo brief periods of extremely high brightness that make them visible across huge distances. The large quasar group (LQG) is composed of 73 quasars and spans about 1.6 billion light-years in most directions, though it is 4 billion light-years … Continue reading

This is an amazing interactive journey through the Cosmos. With 200 billion stars in the Milky Way, there’s a lot to see in our galaxy. Google plotted the nearest stars to Earth’s Sun by tapping a vast array of imagery and data from a variety of sources (including NASA and the European Space Agency). 100,000 Stars is an interactive visualization of our stellar neighborhood created in HTML5 for the Google Chrome web browser. It maps the real locations of over 100,000 nearby stars in relation to our own … Continue reading

There is no single experiment capable of proving or disproving the Big Bang Theory, however there is a plethora of strong, significant observational evidence which supports the theory as the predominant explanation of the origin of our Universe.
The “four pillars” of evidence supporting the Big Bang theory are: The observable expansion of the Universe, the origin of the cosmic background radiation, the abundance of light elements and the formation of galaxies and large-scale structure in the Universe. Continue reading

An proto-planet about the size of Mars, known as Theia, collided with the Earth around 4.6 billion years ago, casting off material from the outer layers of both bodies into orbit around the early Earth, forming a ring, which coalesced to form the Moon. Continue reading

Bill Nye, CEO of the Planetary Society, has recently entered the press in a big way. He has been an advocate for the scientific process and evolution. Now he is petitioning for the support of the Planetary Exploration. And I couldn’t support him more. Support the society and the future of space exploration and development for the benefit of all mankind; for our posterity. Write a letter to the president or donate to the cause. Below is what I have written and submitted: I know you won’t actually … Continue reading

Curiosity is currently exploring Gale Crater, near the equator of Mars. The vehicle is roughly the size of a small SUV, carrying the most advanced array of scientific equipment to be used on the surface of Mars. The MSL spacecraft which carried Curiosity was launched on November 26, 2011 and successfully landed on Aeolis Palus in Gale Crater on Mars on August 6, 2012, 05:17. Continue reading

The image on the left shows three neuron cells and their connections in a mouse’s brain. The neurons are only a few micrometers wide. It was created by Mark Miller, a doctoral student at Brandeis University, who is researching how particular types of neurons are connected to one another. The image on the right was a created by group of astrophysicists working on a simulation of the evolution of the universe and it measures billions of light-years across. These images suggest similar patterns found in vastly different natural … Continue reading

A 19-year-old Egyptian physics student, Aisha Mustafa, patented a new type of propulsion system for spacecraft using quantum physics rather than traditional fuel consuming thrusters. The logic behind this new propulsion is an entirely new concept of space. Traditionally, space is considered a vacuum. No particles anywhere to be found for vast distaces with only “small” planets and stars which warp the fabric of space time around them creating gravity. Mustafa’s proposes there is no such thing as a vacuum, devoid of all particles, waves, and energy. Instead … Continue reading
