State Department censors blueprints of 3D-Printable Gun; It gets pirated anyway.

Shortly after the designs for “The Liberator,” the world’s first functioning 3D printable gun, were on the web, they were removed from public access at the request of the U.S. Department of Defense Trade Controls citing possible arms trafficking violations and claiming control of the information. The files are currently hosted on several torrent sites like The Pirate Bay which have no intention of censoring the information. Continue reading

The Antikythera Mechanism: An ancient hellenistic computer

The Antikythera Mechanism was an ancient analog computer-like device used to calculate the movements of stars and planets created by a Greek genius (possibly Archimedes) between 150 and 100 BCE. In October 1900, a Greek sponge diver happened upon one of the greatest discovers in modern history on the Mediterranean sea bed. Captain Dimitrios Kondos ran into some wild weather to the north of Crete when returning to Greece from a diving expedition around Northern Africa. He decided to shelter from the storm near the small island of … Continue reading

Mind Status = Blown.

From technological advancements to some bizzare natural phenomena, check out these mind blowing facts. I read astounding facts and needed to confirm them because they are just so completely unbelievable… Turns out they really are true for the most part. I had heard of Moore’s Law being broken a while back and it turns out this little mind blowing fact is just slightly out of date. See below for details. The time difference between when Tyrannosaurus and Stegosaurus lived is greater than the time difference between Tyrannosaurus and … Continue reading

Video: Police raid on Kim Dotcom’s mansion.

Court testimony from the case of Kim Dotcom, the founder of file-sharing site Megaupload, has been released. Bloomberg was among those to report on the testimony, noting that a New Zealand police officer said the use of helicopters when arresting Dotcom was “over the top.” During the raid on his $25 million mansion, Kim Dotcom went to a safe room after he heard a helicopter and other noises. Dotcom said he put his hands up when police entered the room some 13 minutes later, despite prior knowledge of the … Continue reading

Apple’s atrocious “Genius” ad campaign: not really genius.

Apple’s new advertising campaign has Steve Jobs rolling in his grave. Traditionally, Apple’s advertising has been minimal and witty (not to mention a bit snobby) but with the new ad campaign for the 2012 Olympic games, they’ve derailed from their successful strategy to something… different. The new ads are… they’re garbage. They make fun of their own customer base, pitting moronic Apple owners and their tech questions against a Bieber-ish Apple “Genius”. “I honestly can’t remember a single Apple campaign that’s been received so poorly,” Ken Segall, advertising … Continue reading

Kim Dotcom’s post-arrest interview.

Campbell Live’s exclusive interview with Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom in his first appearence since being arrested. Dotcom faces a barrage of FBI charges relating to the operation of his file sharing company Megaupload. He raises a number of very interesting points. Essentially the US is using Dotcom as a scapegoat to protect an antiquated, “monopolistic” system of Copyright protection. Megaupload was protected by the DMCA which is a law in the US protecting online service providers of liability for the actions of their users. Megaupload offered an exclusive … Continue reading

Is Facebook causing long-term social and psychological damage?

Andrew Keen wrote a piece featured in CNN’s opinion section about Facebook’s detrimental impact on identity, humanity, and society. Traditional social personas are being fast replaced by a digital sense of self-worth. Your entire life is no longer private, but broadcast to hundreds and thousands of acquaintances and strangers deceptively labeled ‘friends’. What are the long term effects of social media on the human psyche? We drift away from reality, becoming increasingly delusional in our social media bubbles. Who goes where and with whom. Conversations typically held in … Continue reading
